Wisdom teeth can be a bit of a mystery. While some people remember painful swelling and multiple extractions, others never notice anything at all. This can lead to some conflicting stories and experiences that beg the question: “Does everyone have wisdom teeth?” If you’re curious about these mysterious molars, continue reading. The answer might surprise you.
What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to develop, usually erupting between the ages of 17 and 25. They sit at the very back of your mouth and, long ago, were vital to the survival of early humans. They helped these people chew tougher foods like roots, nuts, and grains before cooking or processing was available.
Today, as a result of evolution, our diets and jaw structures have changed, leading to many mouths simply not having enough room to support them.
Does Everyone Have These Teeth?
Many people do develop four wisdom teeth, but it’s by no means a guarantee. Some people only have one, two, or three, but in rare cases, some never form any wisdom teeth at all!
This difference usually comes down to genetics. If your parents or grandparents never had wisdom teeth, you’re more likely to be missing them too.
It’s also possible for wisdom teeth to stay hidden, which is where the trouble starts. When they don’t erupt properly, they can grow into your gum tissue or jawbone, becoming “impacted.” This often results in many issues, necessitating extraction.
Do Wisdom Teeth Always Need to Be Removed?
Wisdom teeth don’t always need to be extracted. If they’re healthy, fully erupted, and easy to clean, they can sometimes stay in place. However, if there’s not enough room for them in your mouth, your dentist may recommend removal—even if there’s no pain.
This is to prevent any future discomfort, infection, or crowding that could create an unpleasant experience for you.
If you feel any pain in your jaw and wonder where it’s coming from, call your dentist and schedule a consultation. Whether you have four wisdom teeth, or none, your dental team can help you keep your smile healthy.
